Conference for the 500th anniversary of the death of the painter Ludovico Brea

Ludovico Brea 500 years later. The restoration of two polyptychs compared: Montalto and Antibes.

The Municipality of Montalto Carpasio is promoting a celebratory event that will commemorate the 500th anniversary of Ludovico Brea’s death on Sunday 24 September 2023.

The 500th anniversary of the presumed death of the illustrious painter became an opportunity to organise a study day on Ludovico Brea, his workshop and his relations with contemporary artistic culture.

The meeting will bring together a number of scholars including art historians, historians, anthropologists and restorers, both Italian and French, with the aim of focusing on innovative and little known or neglected aspects in past studies.

Among other topics, a comparison of the restoration of the polyptych of St. George of Montalto (1516), the Madonna of the Rosary of Antibes (1515) and the polyptych of St. Michael of Diano Borello by Antonio Brea (1516) will be tackled in parallel with an analysis of the works realised in that period both by Ludovico and by other exponents of the workshop such as Antonio Brea and Francesco Brea, including, for example, personalities such as Pietro Brea and Stefano Adrechi.

The conference venue will be in the village of Montalto Carpasio, in the multipurpose hall of the Confraria, from 3.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

The ‘Troubar Clair’ choir will enliven those present with its ancient and modern polyphonies.

At the end, we will move on to the parish church of S. Giovanni Battista, where we will be able to admire the recently restored Polyptych of St. George by Ludovico Brea, and attend a Concert: Duo Organ and Clarinet and other ancient wind instruments, held by M° Marco Peron on organ and M° Claudio Massola on wind instruments.
