From July 15 to October 29, 2023, at the Palafiori, in Sanremo there is Frida Kahlo – The meaning of lifean exhibition, produced by Navigare Ltd. under the patronage of the City of Sanremo and the Department of Culture, dedicated to the great Mexican painter who died 67 years ago, but still an immortal icon of style, femininity and freedom.
Characterized by the use of multimedia, the exhibition occupies the Palafiori museum space and is a sensory journey to discover Frida’s wonderful universe through historical and cultural references, documents, objects, photographs, loves and passions.
Curated by Vincenzo Sanfo, the exhibition presents the most intimate aspects of Frida’s everyday life, portrayed, for example, by the famous American art dealer Julien Lévy, who met her in New York and became her lover in the 1930s. The images come from Lévy’s recently rediscovered private archive.
Also valuable is the photographic section, in which the shots of the well-known Colombian photographer, Leo Matiz, Frida’s close friend, are noted, as well as those of other famous “looks” of her time, including: Nickolas Muray, Carl Van Vechten, the photographers Lucienne Bloch, Imogen Cunningham and Lola Álvarez Bravo, whose particular image of Frida Kahlo on her deathbed is observed.
Attempting to understand Frida’s fluid chaos requires entering her world. A kaleidoscope of cultural and political fragments, of oxymoronic family roots (her mother of Spanish and Amerindian descent and her naturalized German-Mexican father, photographer Guillermo Kahlo Kaufmann), of suffering from illness and then from the serious accident that immobilized her in bed and from miscarriages, but also of love and passion, such as that for Mexican muralist and unfaithful husband Diego Rivera, as well as for other charismatic men, such as Bolshevik revolutionary Lev Trockij.
Along the trail in Frida’s footsteps are then presented faithful full-scale reconstructions of the main rooms of Casa Azul in Mexico City, where the painter lived until her death in 1954 at the age of 47, and reproductions of dresses and jewelry characterizing Frida’s style.
Also on display are autographed letters, personal diary pages, engravings, and terracottas of the Mayan culture so dear to the artist and her husband Diego, and, finally, the section devoted to the painter’s immortal fame, evidenced by 41 philatelic stamps from around the world. Also dedicated to Frida is the light work by sculptor Marco Lodola, on loan to the exhibition.
Frida Kahlo – The Meaning of Life is produced under the patronage of the City of Sanremo, the Embassy of Mexico in Italy, the Consulate General of Mexico in Milan and the Consulate General of Mexico in Genoa.
